Bloom Day, May 2010

Hooray it's Bloom Day! Been a long time since my last Bloom Day post... ....but I'm back baby! :) May is a particularly great bloom month here at Millertime....
....as well as a good month for mysteries. Like this one. I've seen plenty of bulbs pierce leaves, but this daylily did it to itself!

Mrs. Robin is using this platform properly, after an Eastern Phoebe nested on the roof last year.
Yellow violet blooming nicely, despite several recent nighttime freezes...

....epimedium unaffected too...
...and white bleeding heart blooming great in only its' second year in the ground!
Lungwort looks nice too, my mom calls this one "Boys and Girls" in reference to the dual bloom colors....

...white epimedium look very spider-like....

...'Rubrum', not so much.

Hooray for Bloom Day! For more Bloom Day action, check out our founder Carol at May Dreams Gardens.

I totally forgot about bloom day. We had quite a busy weekend. I like your nesting platform, I may have to attempt to build one of those. I also need to get a white bleeding heart. I have a fernleaf and an old fashioned, but they're both pink.

I've been out of the Bloom Day loop for several months, it's just so hard to post pictures at all with dialup as my only connection. The nesting platform was made locally, it looks like a fairly easy project (I'm sure you could find instructions online.) I really like my white bleeding heart, but my pink one is suffering in a bad spot-gotta move it as soon as it emerges. (Or IF it does :(

Very pretty flowers!

We have swallows nesting on our front porch and the rat snakes are already out in force, trying to figure out how to get to them!
I kept hearing a thump on the porch and finally got up around 2am to check what the heck was going on. Turns out it was a snake, who would make it from the top of the door almost to the center of the roof by streeeeetching out, then his own weight would cause him to crash to the porch floor before he could reach the nest and that was the THUMP I was hearing. Damned snakes...

Rat snakes? Eeeee! I actually LIKE snakes. Even had them as pets in the past. But when they climb around my house and try to eat my birds, that's an "altercation-inducing non-verbal communication" (a.k.a. fighting words ;-)

Nice blooms! I bet things look quite a bit different now... whew, it's been hot.

You got that right! To make matters worse, we've had ZERO rain for two weeks! Very un-plant-friendly environment right now! :(

Wow... we've been hot now for weeks (except for a brief dip down below freezing last week, where many people lost plants) and even I caved in and planted my tomatoes early. All of my epimediums, tulips, etc., are long gone... so it was kind of nice to enjoy some extra spring via your post. Nice blooms, Lisa! :)

Wow, sounds like your weather is crazier than mine! We still have nice cool evening temps which help some, but I'm amazed at how well my plants are doing with no rain! (Of course I have been watering, gotta help my friends :)

It's almost bloom day again, Lisa - bet the plants are completely different already! And my sympathies on the dialup situation. On the other hand - you probably get more done!

Oooh - love the white bleeding heart!

We are having some very unfortunate weather out here in Western Canada so our bloom count is a little lower than normal......rain, rain and more rain in the forecast!

Annie-The plants sure DO look different now! Sorry you are rain-poor as well, we are finally having cooler temps and rain right now. I'll do my best to send it along to you! My poor bleeding heart is lonely, I need a pink one to join it.

Tamara-That sure seems to be the trend: either drown or drought! Ah well, all we can do is deal with it I guess :(
