One last word on pot culture........noooo, not this......
...perennials in pot culture! This is what started me putting perennials in pots in the first place. One spring a couple years ago, I found myself way broke with my windowboxes empty. Since I couldn't afford the annuals I wanted, the decision was made to fill them with "extra" perennials that I had on hand. Since sedums are so drought-tolerant, this assortment filled the bill. So well, in fact, that I'd decided to put perennials in several other pots as well...and the rest is history. Unfortunately, I don't have a fall picture to demonstrate how nice this came to look...I was going back and forth between film and digital pictures at this time. But my point is that when annuals aren't in the budget, perennials can "pinch-hit" beautifully!

Most of the pot plants I love are perennials. I haven't tried the sedums yet but i know i should being in southern texas and all.

You are smart to use the sedums. There are so many kinds and all do well in containers.
Your right sometimes buying annuals ever year can be expensive, that's why more and more I'm starting thing by seed. If you want some starts of some of my sedums, let me know, I can send you some cuttings so you can root them. They ship great. All the best, BOB

Amen, sister! And that's why I often try to overwinter pricey or hard-to-find annuals inside. (Dichondra dies back in the house, but since it gets tucked inside the bay laurel pot it still gets watered and then it pops back up in the spring.) Perennials, houseplants... whatever fits the bill.

Oh, I've also found that if winter hits you too hard, and you order (in a moment of deserved weakness) too many perennials from places like Bluestone where they're both small and sold in quantity, sticking them in a combo pot for a season is a great way to deal with them until you can make a new bed in the spring. lol.

Vanillalotus-Oh yea, sedums would be the bomb in your climate...cactus as well!

Bob-Thanks to Kim/Blackswamp girl introducing me to winter-sowing, I'm excited about seeds, too. Thank you for offering sedums, and I will absolutely take you up on it! I have plenty of seeds, sedums and what have you to trade!! Pardon me while I'm all over your blog like a cheap suit and checking out your sedums... ;-)

Kim-Hmmm...planting annuals with houseplants? Genius! In the nick of time for me to utilize it, too....Thank you!! Combo pot of "punies" is a good idea, too...it would have helped me this year especially since it was so dry. Man, I get the best inspiration from you!
