You get what you pay for? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Take this rose, for instance..."Golden Showers" yellow climber (I snicker when I hear this name)...impulse buy from Walmart for $4.96 plus tax. Plenty cheap, right? So I take it out to soak in rooting hormone, and gee...look at that extensive root system-not!

Oh well, after an hour's soak, I planted it anyway. Hopefully it will grow okay, I think I'll put some morning glories here as well, so the trellis has something to "do". Worth $4.96 + tax+ my efforts? Time will tell...

I bought some roses before (the winter frost, and sunshine) that were in big pots. When i took them from the pots they were totally bare root.I planted them and they were the most beautiful roses i have grown. So you cannot always tell from the roots on purchase. If they are happy they will grow and you will have golden shower roses. That name needs altering unless you have an alternative way of watering the roses ;)

You never know... I have planted dried-out, horrible looking boxed roses from Home Depot and had them come back just fine! I have faith in your TLC. :)

Did you wear your hat pulled down low and sunglasses when you paid for it?
When it came out in 1956, I'll bet there were way fewer people who even thought of the giggle-inducing meaning. The name would have just sounded pretty. If it were a new rose now the catalog would end up on Jay Leno's Headlines.

And cheap roses sometimes do fine - so good luck, Lisa!

Thanks for the encouragement everyone! I hope this rose performs better than I expect, because it will give me an excuse to buy more! :)
