"If You Wanna Farm the Worms, Then You Gotta Build the Barn"...Okay, maybe the livingroom isn't exactly an appropriate workspace for worm bin construction, but some people fix their Harleys in the house, so what the heck. I followed the instructions found at the link in my previous post, except for the fact that I could only find 14 gal. totes, not 10 gal. as advised. Otherwise, it all went pretty smooth...I thought the 1/4" holes in the bottom of the "reactor" bins where the worms live seemed kinda big...but took it on faith there wasn't a misprint. The lid is pretty slick...seems it will allow enough ventilation without causing the desert conditions I got with my open bin. And the lumber I used was only 97 cents for the 8 foot 1x2" board (called a "furring strip" at Menard's)...the bins were $5.67 each (3 purch.)...and the screen I had on hand. My grand total for the bin was $17.98 + tax....beats the heck out of the commercial bins that are usually $100.00 or so. I have to get bedding yet, but I'm nearly prepared for tenants!

Wow...did you design that up yourself? You should submit it to Fine Gardening...you could win a $100 gift certificate and then the whole thing would have cost you -$80. Very cool.

Yea...I wish I could take credit for that design! I WILL give myself credit for research...you wouldn't believe how many homemade worm bin designs are out there! I almost gave up and bought an expensive commercially made bin, but that seemed to defeat the "grassroots" feel of the project. But this website in Oregon had lots of good info, and they semmed to have a lot of experience backing their design. It really was easy to make, also...and I'm not EVEN mechanically/carpenter-ally (?) inclined!
